Let’s get one thing out of the way: Cliven Bundy is an unabashed, racist bigot. There, I said it. So I don’t want to hear any charges that I’m in any way trying to defend someone who is so clearly misguided and wrong about an awful lot of things. That being said, let’s talk about selective outrage.
I am in agreement that conservatives rushed in way too fast to defend a man they really knew very little about. All many of them needed to hear were the terms “cattle battle” and “patriot,” and they pledged their undying support to Mr. Bundy even faster than the amount of time it took them to side with George Zimmerman in the Trayvon Martin case. Yet, here we are again, with many on the Right having to backpedal after speaking too soon. What’s even more disturbing is the fact that some conservatives like former Congressman Joe Walsh are continuing to defend the guy–probably in order to save face. With all due respect, Congressman, how about just admitting that you were wrong and moving forward? And I certainly don’t need people telling me to watch the full 67 minute interview with Cliven Bundy in order to experience his controversial remarks in their full context. It’s quite clear what he said, what he meant, and that he’s happy to repeat the sentiment dozens of times in live press conferences if need be.
But all of this is not to say that the Left isn’t salivating over the whole thing. Howard Dean proudly proclaimed on yesterday’s “Morning Joe” that Cliven Bundy’s racism is a gift to Democrats:
Not so fast, Deaniac. The video at the top of this page is a little something I put together with cooperation from Grabien in order to refresh the memory of Howie, as well as other Dems who have been spouting off on MSNBC throughout the past 48 hours about how Bundy proudly speaks the words that all conservatives secretly feel. Indeed, the Democrats have a rather large problem with racism themselves. Some of the guilty parties are even holding current positions of power inside the White House.
So let’s cool it with the feigned, selective outrage, okay? I certainly don’t see anyone on the Left calling for Joe Biden or Harry Reid to be removed from office, despite their having made some of the most infamous and unfortunate racial remarks in modern political history. YouTube is a stubborn little thing for hypocrites, and perhaps my compilation of “memorable moments” in Dem racism throughout the years can move us a little further along in putting this kind of crap to bed. Cliven Bundy is a jerk, but if Democrats are going to insist on painting all conservatives with a broad Bundy brush, then I have no problem pointing them to their own words.
