Israeli Security officials said Monday that the Israeli military has discovered the bodies of three Israeli teenagers–Eyal Yifrach, 19; Gilad Shaar, 16; and Naftali Frenkel, a 16-year-old dual U.S.-Israeli citizen–who were kidnapped in the West Bank almost a month ago. The search for the missing teens became international news shortly after their disappearance was reported, setting off a country-wide manhunt and a large-scale crackdown on the Hamas terrorist group.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who blamed Hamas for the kidnappings, called an emergency security Cabinet meeting Monday. Israel’s Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon said that Israel will “eradicate Hamas.” “We will not stop until Hamas is completely destroyed,” he continued.
Just days after the boys’ abduction, a Hamas spokesman said Netanyahu’s comments attributing blame were “stupid and baseless,” according to CNN.
However, CNN also reports that Hamas praised the kidnappings.
Secretary of State John Kerry also pointed the finger at Hamas for the kidnappings saying, “The United States strongly condemns the kidnapping of three Israeli teenagers and calls for their immediate release.”
Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said “[Prime Minister Binyamin] Netanyahu should know that his threats don’t scare Hamas. If he wages war on the Gaza Strip, the gates of hell will be opened.”
