On Jay Carney’s Final Day as White House Press Secretary, This Happened

No, your ears do not deceive you. That’s actually the sound of Guided By Voices’ “Motor Away” blaring through the speakers of the White House briefing room. The über-dorknerd named Jay Carney walked out to the podium on Wednesday for one final time as Barack Obama’s Press Secretary, and he did it like the emo rock star he always wanted to be.

Carney has made no secret of his Guided By Voices obsession throughout the years. It was less than one month ago that Jay, donning a t-shirt and jeans, introduced the band before a concert in D.C.:

Truth be told, I too have been known to rock out to some GBV once in a while. I try not to let Carney’s fanboy tendencies spoil the experience for me, though I have to believe that it’s starting to get downright embarrassing for his family.

Godspeed, Mr. Carney. We’ll miss your daily dose of lies. Best of luck in your new career managing your son’s band. Seriously.
