Once upon a time, Susan Rice was sent out with a handful of talking points to appear on all of the Sunday morning news programs and discuss a controversial matter of national security. Sound familiar? Of course it does, because that’s exactly what happened on June 1st, 2014.
Don’t worry; the déjà vu effect will wear off eventually. I’m not talking about Benghazi this time, but rather, the Bowe Bergdahl prisoner swap which, at this point, can competently be referred to as Bergdahlzi. It certainly has all the same trappings of a foreign policy disaster. In this case, just substitute the words “offensive video” for “urgent and acute” health matter, and you’ve got a real whopper of a lie to justify yet another mess that never should have happened. It’s hard to tell whether National Security Adviser Susan Rice was dispatched by the administration in a failed attempt to correct her mistakes of the past, or whether she was specifically selected so that she could try and poke a finger into the eyes of Obama’s critics. But either way, she screwed up. Again.
Congress is asking a lot of questions regarding why Obama felt he was above the law and didn’t have to notify them before releasing five top Taliban commanders from Gitmo. The only justification given was the aforementioned “urgent and acute” health matter. Yet, as just about anyone could have predicted, that narrative is already falling apart, if it hasn’t completely crumbled already. Here’s the Pentagon reporter from NBC News, commenting that upon the release of footage showing the transfer of Bergdahl from the Taliban to the U.S. military, the apparent deserter appeared to be in “remarkably good shape“:
Now, you might be asking yourself: why should I trust one journalist’s assertion? Fair enough. So here’s another. CNN’s reporting shows that Taliban chiefs themselves told Special Ops forces during the transfer that Bergdahl didn’t have ANY serious health issues:
Oops. This is starting to look pretty bad for Susan Rice. Notice how no one in the administration, from Jay Carney to Chuck Hagel, has been willing or able to identify what Bergdahl’s health issues were. As Senator Dianne Feinstein pointed out this week, preliminary reports showed that he was “under-nourished,” but FAR from “malnourished.” And that brings me to the next point:
According to NBC’s Richard Engel, the Taliban itself is actually providing more information about Bergdahl’s situation than the U.S. government!
Okay, when you’re getting straighter facts from terrorists than the American president, there’s definitely something wrong.
All of this secrecy is not reflecting too well on an already damaged Obama administration, so you can expect plenty of hearings on the way in Washington very soon. Combine the perception of a cover-up with dozens of devastating interviews from Bergdahl’s squadron members calling him a “deserter” and a “traitor” who’s responsible for the deaths of U.S. soldiers, and you can imagine the number of cabinet officials engaging in face palms at this very moment. As MSNBC’s Chuck Todd has been reporting, Team Obama was counting on some blowback over the trade, but not the level of vitriol that’s been coming their way. So now they’ve begun firing back in the only way they know how: attempting to discredit the critics. And in a truly shameful display, Todd says the White House is accusing Bergdahl’s squad of “swift-boating” him:
Over at the Obama State Department, that sentiment was echoed, as Spokesperson Marie Harf asserted that Berghdahl knows the circumstances of his capture better than his own squad mates. Way to call our American heroes a bunch of liars, Marie!
It’s just getting worse and worse for an administration whose first instinct always seems to be to lie. On Tuesday, USA Today’s Susan Page questioned how the White House could have possibly managed to turn this into “such a mess,” when a simple Google search would have easily raised dozens of red flags about the questionable circumstances surrounding Bergdahl’s capture by the Taliban. Even longtime Obama lover Mika Brzezinski over at MSNBC questioned why Susan Rice would possibly keep repeating the claim that Bergdahl served honorably when it was so clear that he hadn’t. Now comes word that Bergdahl may have in fact been an enemy collaborator. The whole affair is disastrous for the Obama administration, and it would appear that the only thing they succeeded in doing here was to get people to stop talking about the VA scandal. So…win for them, I guess?
There’s really only one reasonable explanation for all of this, and the only person to come out and say it was a psychologist over at the Fox Business Network.
Put simply, Barry’s gone cray-cray!
And that, my friends, is how Bergdahl became Bergdahlzi.
