With brand new legal counsel and his court hearing less than a week away, Fox News is airing an hour-long special tonight on the situation of Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi, who has been wrongly imprisoned in Mexico on weapons charges.
“Wrong Turn: Marine Held in Mexico,” will be hosted by Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren and will feature interviews with Sgt. Tahmooressi, his mother Jill Tahmooressi, other Marines furious about his imprisonment, and several U.S. politicians, including Hillary Clinton.
Elsewhere, Rick Sarmiento of 2 Million Bikers to DC— an organization formed to support members of the military— joined a Tahmooressi bike rally in Omaha, Nebraska. Sarmiento says he reached out to Tahmooressi’s family when he heard about his story and told them “you’re our neighbors.”
Residents and supporters in Sgt. Tahmooressi’s hometown of Weston, Florida held another motorcycle rally on Friday, as part of the Weston Independence Day parade. They also plan to ride to and hold a protest at the Mexican Consulate.
Jill Tahmooressi says she was not happy when a spokesman for Secretary of State John Kerry told reporters that Kerry had mentioned “the issue” with Mexican authorities during a visit to Mexico City.
“Andrew is a Marine, he’s more than an ‘issue,'” she said according to the LA Times.
She says this Independence Day weekend feels “bittersweet.”
“I’m proud of Andrew for his service to keep us free,” she said. “But tomorrow’s Independence Day and he won’t be joining us.”
When Hillary Clinton was asked what the U.S. could do to get Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi out of the Mexican prison he is currently rotting in, she said we should be “burning up the telephones, sending envoys, not just our ambassador but others coming in talking to the highest levels of Mexican officials. Making it clear that this is really important to us.”
Hopefully, with Tahmooressi’s story getting more and more coverage, President Obama will hear about it in the news where he apparently learns about everything else.
It’s safe to assume that when Obama talked to Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto a few weeks ago and failed to even mention Marine Sgt. Tahmooressi’s status, it’s probably because Obama hadn’t read about it in the newspaper.
No less than two dozen members of Congress have urged Obama to put pressure on Mexican authorities and to demand Tahmooressi’s release. Several of those lawmakers will be featured on Tonight’s Fox News special, including Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Alpine), who served in Iraq and Afghanistan as a Marine officer.
Mexican officials have insisted that their courts won’t be swayed by political pressure.
