Summer is almost over and school is upon us once again. I know, bummer! But there’s still time to hit the beach one last time to work on that tan.
If you’re about to start another academic year, well, you know what type of propaganda awaits you. So to help prep you with the classroom clash, Daily Surge organized a list of books that you should have top of mind. Some of these books are new, and others were published a few years ago. But they do tell the story of why America must be defended and cherished.
And whether you’re heading back to campus or just want a super informative, eye-opening read — all of these books should have a spot on your bookshelf (or tablet!).
Lt. Col. Allen West, one of the most exciting voices on the conservative side of American politics, may have lost his congressional seat in the last election cycle, but he is not sitting idly by. In his heartfelt book, Guardian of the Republic: An American Ronin’s Journey to Faith, Family and Freedom, the patriotic veteran discusses difficult topics with total candor.
He walks us through why he became conservative, how his military experience shapes his worldview, the entrenched liberal establishment in politics, the media, and the popular culture, and he also tackles the issues of advancing conservative ideas within the black community.
“The book is a philosophical biography intended to provide a clear understanding as to why I am so passionate about and fight so fervently for this Constitutional Republic,” Lt. Col. West told Daily Surge. “I speak of the dilemmas we face in preserving this Republic. Throughout, I seek to offer solutions. Guardian of the Republic gives readers some insight into who I am, and challenges them to become Guardians of the Republic as well.”
West highlights pivotal moments of his military career: the evil of Islamic fundamentalism in the face of a woman raped by the Iraqi soldiers after they killed her husband and brother; the reality of communism and socialism he saw on the faces of East Germans, and the danger posed by the totalitarian Stalinist state while standing in the Korean demilitarized zone.
“Perhaps my favorite section of the book is addressing the idea of black conservatism — certainly not a new phenomenon,” says the man the Left loves to hate. “The book “takes you back to my upbringing in the inner city of Atlanta and understanding the principles and values my parents inculcated into me.”
Allen West has emerged as one of the most authentic voices in conservative politics. He eloquently explains the genesis of our country and the philosophy of governance that threatens our nation’s existence in Guardian of the Republic.
Envision an America where American patriots have taken their country back from the progressive ruling elites: the welfare state has withered away; the American economy has been unshackled from onerous regulations; the nation’s military is strong and robust; constitutional conservatives hold solid majorities throughout the political system, and liberty lovers control all of our key cultural institutions. Kurt Schlichter, a Townhall columnist and conservative commentator, takes us there in his latest book, Conservative Insurgency: The Struggle to Take America Back 2009-2041.
“I wanted to show what America would be like if people like us took back the culture,” Schlichter old Daily Surge. “I wanted to paint a picture that shows it wouldn’t be some sort of creepy theocracy full of repression and hate, like the left portrays.”
Fictional characters, ranging from the most apolitical of everyday Americans to retired military personnel, are instrumental in bringing America back from the brink of the abyss. They narrate how the conservative insurgency came about and how they came to be involved in it.
“The other thing I wanted to do was inspire regular Americans and show them that they are key to our success,” Schlichter explained. “There’s no ‘white knight’ coming to save us. Taking back America and restoring liberty is something only we can do. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.”
If you enjoyed World War Z, then you should probably add Conservative Insurgency to the top of your book list. Only instead of fighting flesh-eating zombies to save humanity, conservatives overcome all types of political disasters in the process, including two presidential terms of Hillary Clinton.
If you are not sure how American values have benefit America and the world, read Dennis Prager’s book Still the Best Hope: Why the World Needs American Values to Triumph. Prager, a conservative radio host and syndicated columnist, offers a grand tour of American virtues and a poignant analysis of the global political crisis of the 21st century: the battle of worldviews.
The whole world must choose between three cultural forces that are competing for humanity’s allegiance, according to Prager. European-style democratic socialism, fundamentist Islam, and Americanism. Americanism is the most viable program ever devised to produce a good society.
Leftists and Islamists crusade because they know exactly what they are fighting for, Prager argues, while most Americans cannot identify American values and therefore cannot fight on their behalf.
Prager came to realize American values – Americanism as he dubs it – when he emptied his pockets and stared at coins. The designers of money have been telling Americans for over a century what America stood for — “the American Trinity” — liberty, natural rights, and the melting pot ideals of a national unity. No other country proclaims these three values as their core.
If you are tired of hearing America bashed by people who don’t know what the heck they’re talking about, you need to read Michael Medved’s The 10 Big Lies About America: Combating Destructive Distortions About Our Nation. This book arms you with objective evidence for the next time one of your “know-it-all” friends belligerently recycles inaccurate information about politics, economics, race, war, or other contentious issues. You will be prepared to put vicious slanders about America to rest.
“Those who support President Obama’s headlong retreat from power and prominence believe that America shouldn’t lead the world because America doesn’t deserve to lead,” Medved told Daily Surge. “According to this argument, our brutal past of genocide against Native Americans, enslavement of Africans, exploitation of workers through rapacious capitalism, and ruthless imperialism around the globe should disqualify us from any efforts to influence or inspire other nations.”
“I wrote this book to arm open-minded Americans with the evidence and argument they need to rebut the most common smears against their country,” he said. “In a point-by-point style, the book lays out the details of today’s trendy anti-Americanism and lays out the sometimes shocking truth (and hidden glories) about the nation’s true past and present.”
This book is a must read for all those who seek effective ways to rebut most slanderous accusations levied against America today. It’s also a great reminder that, as Americans, we should feel blessed, not burdened, by our heritage.
Jack Vega, a former military commander and a business owner, and his family, escape a tyrannical American government in Chris Salcedo’s action packed thriller Liberty Rises.
“Liberty Rises is a story about a future America,” Salcedo told Daily Surge. “In this America, presidents have built upon the shameful legacy of Barack Obama. The result is truly dark and scary place. “
This futuristic America has fallen victim to crippling taxes, vain and power hungry politicians, a police state, high unemployment, and a deep recession. (Not too futuristic, eh?)
“The heroes in the book, led by Jack Vega, set out to save America. They soon realize that goal to be impossible,” he said. “They instead decide to preserve what is best about America and leave their homeland behind. “
Vega relocates his family and fellow entrepreneurs to the lost continent of Atlantis where they will set up a society based on the principles on which America was founded. Vega and his crew find a way to bring back the beacon of light and freedom to a hopeless planet.
Echoing the Gipper, Salcedo said, “Freedom is only one generation away from being lost.”
“It is my hope that Liberty Rises reengages the conservative ideals into education and the pop culture so that the United States will always remain the beacon of freedom, liberty and prosperity for the world.”
The Obama administration has dodged accountability on scandal after scandal over the past six years: Benghazi, Obamacare, Fast and Furious, IRS targeting of conservatives, the National Security Agency, Solyndra, snooping on reporters… the list goes on. The administration routinely claims that investigations are underway and that the president was unaware of his administration’s abuse of power. Right.
New York Times bestselling author Ben Shapiro chronicles all of the high crimes and misdemeanors of the Obama administration in his book The People Vs. Barack Obama: The Criminal Case Against the Obama Administration. He makes a case for both civil and criminal prosecution against members of the administration.
“Our government has become a glorified shakedown routine in which the executive branch arbitrarily decides which laws to enforce, whose business to target, and what rights are worthwhile,” Shapiro told Daily Surge. “Obama is the apex of that mindset, the top criminal at the head of a criminal enterprise. Until we correct the mindset, we will never be able to win back our rights and our way of government.”
The People vs. Barack Obama strips away the soft media picture of the Obama Administration and details how each scandal has led to instances of espionage, involuntary manslaughter, violation of internal revenue laws, bribery, and obstruction of justice, and this conduct has yet to be prosecuted.
Shapiro says he “wrote the book in order to reshift the conversation about the nature of the Obama administration — and our government in general — from one of politics to one of criminality.”
Why does college cost so much? Is it really worth it? The price of a college degree has skyrocketed, even though the performance in the classroom has taken a nosedive. And to make matters worse, many students are graduated from college with obscene loans to pay back and are having trouble finding good jobs.
Glenn H. Reynolds, the blogger extraordinaire also known as InstaPundit, explains how parents, students, and educators can reclaim and remake American education in his book, The New School: How the Information Age Will Save American Education from American education.
Young Americans are increasingly unprepared for a competitive global economy, Reynolds explains, because higher and lower education operates on an outdated 19th century model. Every other industry has adapted and modified, yet the education system has dragged its feet to enter the information age.
“I kept noticing that the price of education was going up, while the returns for education were, at best, staying the same and perhaps even going down,” Reynolds told Daily Surge. “That called to mind ‘Stein’s Law,’ something that can’t go on forever, wouldn’t. And that got me wondering what the process would look like, and what people should be doing. The result was The New School.
