Without a doubt, the most memorable moment from this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards was the touching tribute to the late Robin Williams, delivered by the entertainer’s close friend and frequent collaborator, Billy Crystal. After the news broke of Robin’s untimely death on August 11th, Billy tweeted simply, “No words.”
Well, he took his time to gather his thoughts, and shared them with the world on Monday night. “It’s very hard to talk about him in the past, because he was so present in our lives,” Crystal said of Williams. “For almost forty years, he was the brightest star in the comedy galaxy. But while some of the brightest of celestial bodies are actually extinct, their molten energy long since cooled, miraculously, because they float in the heavens so far away from us now, their beautiful light will shine on us forever, and the glow will be so bright, it will warm your heart and make your eyes glisten, and you’ll think to yourselves, Robin Williams, what a concept.”
Billy’s tribute was complete with the kinds of stories that can only come from someone who knew Williams as well as he did, and it was followed by a tear-inducing montage of Robin’s work. You can watch the entire segment here:
MTV should take note of the remembrance, as they were too focused on the shooting of Michael Brown during the previous night’s Video Music Awards to bother mentioning Williams.
Side note: Gawker is taking issue with the way the montage ended (the punchline to the profane closing gag was removed and some Foley work featuring footsteps was inserted), but I didn’t find it bothersome or jarring.
