When This Student Asked Billy Joel to Perform With Him, Awesomeness Ensued

It takes some serious cojones to approach a celebrity musician and ask him to perform with you. But 19-year-old college freshman Michael Pollack has some serious cojones.

Billy Joel was visiting Vanderbilt University for a question-and-answer session and performance for the students (man, why couldn’t my college get performers like this?) It was during this Q&A that young Michael decided to raise his hand and confidently ask Mr. Joel if he’d join him in singing “New York State of Mind” while Michael tickled the ivories.

Joel agreed, but judging by his reaction, he probably wasn’t expecting much.

And boy, was Billy blown away!

Michael is clearly a musical prodigy, and the performance was simply breathtaking. Billy seemed to genuinely enjoy it, and afterwards proclaimed, “Michael Pollack — remember his name!

I certainly don’t think Michael had any confidence problems before that evening, but getting the endorsement from one of his idols? That’s an ego-boost that will last a lifetime.
