Boosters Of Boston Olympics Try To Overcome Union Skepticism

Labor unions are have been surprisingly reluctant to support Boston’s bid for the Olympics. But the group trying to bring the 2024 summer games to Boston is still confident.

Erin Murphy Rafferty, executive vice president of Boston 2024, told The Daily Caller News Foundation that they have “enjoyed broad support from an array of community, elected, business, civic and labor leaders since the beginning of this process.”

“Should Boston move on to the next phase of the Olympics bidding process, we are confident we’ll continue to build strong support from the public and private sectors — including unions,” Rafferty noted.

Rafferty concluded, “Boston 2024’s leaders, as well as Mayor Walsh, have extremely positive and productive relationships with the state’s many labor unions and we anticipate unprecedented cooperation from all sectors as we work toward creating an innovative, sustainable and successful Olympics.”

Boston 2024 has also assured labor groups that all construction projects related to the Olympic will be done by union workers.

Nevertheless, the response from Boston labor unions has so far been tepid. The Boston Globe reported that some of the unions simply wanted more information before they will be willing to support the bid while other unions wanted specific labor agreements drafted.
