Can Lois Lerner Still Access Your Tax Info?

Just when you thought you were safe from creepy, corrupt bureaucrats…

A new report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) revealed that former IRS employees have access to IRS computer systems and the information on them, long after they’ve departed from the agency.

The GAO, the an independent investigative arm of Congress, digs into the potential for fraud, waste, and abuse of taxpayer dollars.

And when it comes to IRS efficiency, the GAO report found alarming deficiencies in the security of IRS financial reporting systems. Those kinds of insecurities leave vulnerabilities that allow 1.6 million taxpayers to fall victim to identity theft, which is what occurred in the first half of 2013.

A GAO report co-author said the massive amount of taxpayer information the IRS stores is a goldmine for identity thieves and rogue employees like Lois Lerner.

While many Americans believe Lois Lerner should be serving a long prison sentence, the disgraced former IRS official is free and is still pulling in a big payday. In fact, Lerner received $129,300 in bonuses between 2010 and 2013. That is the same timeframe when Lerner headed up the tax-exempt division that spearhead a targeting campaign against Tea Party nonprofit groups.

It’s diabolical weasels like Lois Lerner and devastatingly bad reports like the GAO’s that lead Americans to believe it’s probably a good idea to do away with the IRS like Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz wants to.
