Dem Senator Will be Charged With Corruption

If you think that you’re having a bad day, it can’t be as bad as Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ), as the Justice Department is bringing criminal corruption charges against him, alleging that he used his Senate office to help a democratic donor in exchange for favors.

Cronyism, ahem.

Sources close to the case say that Attorney General Eric Holder has officially signed off on requests to proceed with the charges. A formal announcement is expected within a couple of weeks.

According to CNN:

The case could pose a high-profile test of the Justice Department’s ability to prosecute sitting lawmakers, having already spawned a legal battle over whether key evidence the government has gathered is protected by the Constitution’s Speech and Debate clause.

The FBI and prosecutors from the Justice Department’s public integrity section, have pursued a variety of allegations against Menendez, who has called the probe part of “smear campaign” against him.

The case will focus on his relationship an ophthalmologist named Salomon Melgen, who has been a long time political donor and friend of Menendez.

Investigators are looking at Menendez took in 2010 to the Dominican Republic as a personal guest of Melgen. In 2013 this trip became public and Menendez was forced to reimburse Melgen a reported $58,000, claiming the lack of documentation as an “oversight.”

Bottom line: It looks like the Justice Department got one thing right under Eric Holder.
