Racist Obama Jokes Allegedly Contained In Ferguson Officials’ Emails

Ferguson police have been ensnared in scandal, but this is a new one.

NPR reports, citing anonymous sources, that an unreleased report on Ferguson police’s alleged racially discriminatory practices includes racist emails about President Obama.

Two emails between police and local court employees reportedly contained racist comments, one saying Obama would not be president for long because “what black man holds a steady job for four years.” The other reportedly joked that a black woman ended her pregnancy at a hospital and then received a check two weeks later from Crime Stoppers.

Besides the racial comments, the report will show that blacks in Ferguson were disproportionately targeted by police in traffic stops, searches, use of force, and sentencing, reports CNN, also citing an anonymous source.

Even though only 67 percent of Ferguson’s population is black, from 2012 to 2014, 85 percent of people stopped by Ferguson police, 93 percent of people arrested, and 90 percent of people who received citations were black.

Black drivers were twice as likely as white drivers to be searched, but 26% less likely to have contraband, CNN reports. Blacks were also 68 percent less likely to have their case dismissed by a judge and much more likely to be arrested during traffic stops for outstanding warrants.

Also, 88 percent of the time Ferguson police used force, it was on blacks. Blacks were also more likely to be cited for breaking minor laws. Almost all tickets for jaywalking and “failure to comply” were given to blacks.

The long-awaited investigation into Ferguson Police Department’s alleged racially motivated practices is due to come out any day now, but this report is one of multiple leaks.

The DOJ could sue if Ferguson police do not comply with reform efforts.
