WTF: BBQ Pitmasters Forced To Take Down American Flags

The P.C. Police were at it again, and in Alabama of all places.

Unless you include guns in a BBQ competition, I can’t really imagine anything more American than ribs and beer. So you would think that raising an American Flag wouldn’t be an issue, right?

Wrong!

Much to his surprise, Pitmaster Jeff Petkevicius was ordered, along with several others, to take down the American flags that were hanging from their BBQ trailers, at a competition in Daphne, AL, because they were allegedly violating a city ordinance.

“The whole time I’m thinking, the reason I fly the flag is because I love America,” he said. “I love what it stands for. It’s a way to say to our current and former troops, thank you.”

So Jeff did what anyone God-hearing American would do: He raised the flag anyway.

“It was a matter of saying there are things more important than a barbecue competition, If they want to kick me out, I’ll leave,” He said.

What’s the ordinance that he violated?

Daphne Mayor Dane Haygood denied that such an ordinance existed and denied that anyone from the city instructed competitors to remove their American flags.

“No one from the city advised or asked anyone to take down flags of any type,” he said.

According to FoxNews, the request came from the tour director of the Kansas City Barbecue Society who was the one organizing the event.

KCBS Spokesman Mike McCloud said, “as a measure of precaution, we asked everyone to take down any kind of signs or any kind of flags that were being displayed. It turned out that some of those happened to be American flags.”

And later they issued a statement completely backpedaling:

In hindsight, we can honestly say that we BLEW the original call. But thankfully, we CORRECTED it within 7 hours. Nothing made us more proud than telling our BBQ teams to hoist the Red White & Blue as they wished, and that if there was something inappropriate in doing so, we would take the heat.

As Todd Starnes put it, this is something you would expect to happen at a vegetarian cook-off.

If you’re annoyed at this story, don’t be…You’re all invited to my “God, Guns, and Freedom” barbecue. No CCW permit needed.
