  • The 8 Most Astonishing Details Behind Freddie Gray’s Horrific Death

Protesters are outraged over the strange and horrifying death of Freddie Gray — the man who died Sunday after being in Baltimore police custody — but in all the media frenzy, understanding what actually happened can be difficult.

So here are the eight things you need to know about the case so far.

    1. Gray was taken into police custody the morning of April 12 after fleeing from police. A crucial video appears to show part of the arrest:

    2. The van stopped at one point and Gray was put in leg irons because, according to police, he was “irate.”

    3. Less than an hour later, after riding in a police van, Gray had horrible injuries and was requesting medical assistance. His voice box was crushed and his spine severely injured, 80 percent severed at the neck.

    4. He did not get medical assistance immediately when he requested it, but long after.

    5. All the officers involved — six total — have been suspended.

    6. This isn’t the first time a similar incident has happened in Baltimore.

    7. Baltimore’s mayor is being called on to resign, but he called the death “absolutely unacceptable” and demanded answers Friday, likely trying to be seen as someone calling for justice instead of part of the problem.

    8. Protesters aren’t letting up. While many protests over similar incidents have fizzled out, protesters have claimed they will shut down the city Saturday.
