  • Russia Is Building A Massive Military Base On Ukrainian Border

Russia is building a military base along the Ukrainian border, signaling its preparing for long-term support of the pro-Russian separatists fighting for Ukraine.

The massive base — scheduled for completion in April — will house ammunition depots and barracks for several thousand soldiers, and will be used to train soldiers, reported Reuters.

Russia has annexed Crimea and is accused by NATO of sending arms and troops to pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine. Some fear Putin will use the infighting as a pretext to invade. Russia denies its military is in Ukraine. (RELATED: Russia Accidentally Reveals Its Massive Ukraine Body Count)

The Reuters reporter investigating the new base was temporarily detained and accused of being a Ukrainian spy. Russian officials didn’t respond to Reuters questions about the purpose of the base and whether it’s connected to the fight for Ukraine.

The base will include a communications node, massive dining room, a skating rink and swimming pool and more than 1,000 residential apartments. “They are building a military town,” a local resident told Reuters.

The U.S. Army is called a “likely enemy” in documents describing the plan for the site.

The Ukrainian parliament agreed to give the pro-Russian separatists more autonomy in rebel-held areas in September, causing relative peace, but the truce is not very stable because both sides have not agreed to withdraw all weapons from the conflict area.
