  • EU Faces Total ‘Collapse’ Under Weight Of Refugee Crisis, Official Says

Several officials warn that the European Union may be on the verge of a collapse if it doesn’t take drastic measures to stop the refugee influx.

EU member states had another extra meeting over the weekend to discuss the Syrian refugee crisis. Slovenian Prime Minister Miro Cerar took to an extreme by stating the Union is on the verge of falling apart.

“If we don’t find a solution today, if we don’t do everything we can today, then it is the end of the European Union as such,” he said, according to ITV.

Slovenia has seen more than 62,000 refugees cross its borders in the past week — equal to more than 3 percent of the total population of the country — after Hungary put up a fence.  If the country doesn’t receive more monetary support from the Union it will consider closing up its borders as well, Cerar said. (RELATED: Hungary’s Trump-Style Fence Keeps Refugees Out)

German Chancellor Angela Merkel stood by her position of open borders and said they need to make sure “that the people who are wandering about and living under unbearable conditions receive help,” above anything else.

The United Kingdom will hold a vote on whether the country should remain a part of the EU as the public is questioning the benefits of a membership. Prime Minister David Cameron is against the idea but said he will stand by the outcome of the election.

“From the outset, he has been clear this will be a straightforward in/out choice. Leave means leave,” an aide to Cameron said Sunday, according to The Sunday Express. “It is not credible to suggest that the majority of the British public could vote to leave and then the UK government would ignore the voters and negotiate to remain. That option of ‘let’s have another go’ is not on the ballot paper.”
