Bill Clinton appeared as a guest on Comedy Central’s the Daily Show this past week and he said something that I wholeheartedly agree with (which is shocking).
Speaking with the shows host, Trevor Noah, Clinton argued that the United States, as a nation, has actually come a long way in dealing with bigotry and prejudice. However, the former President argued, we do still have one prejudice remaining that we’re having a hard time getting rid of…
We don’t want to be around people who disagree with us.
“America has come so far. We’re less racist, sexist, homophobic and anti specific religions than we used to be. We have one remaining bigotry: We don’t want to be around anyone who disagrees with us. The crowd’s laughing, but they didn’t laugh loud because they know I’m telling the truth…”
I completely agree with that entire statement. He is exactly right, with one caveat.
This statement should be directed at American liberals. See, we on the right are fine having people we disagree with around. In fact, we encourage it, we ask for the opportunity to debate our ideas. We understand that our nation has endured disagreement for the entirety of our history, but today’s liberals are doing everything they can to silence the voices of those opposing them.
Conservatives have been saying exactly this for years, and honestly, it’s been getting worse. Every now and again a liberal like Clinton, or President Obama, or Bill Maher will mention the problem and say it needs to stop, but thus far it’s only gotten worse. Because for every Democrat leader who decries the politically correct bullies, there are hundreds of liberal professors, pundits, and bloggers cheering on the Left’s abusive fascism.
Case in point: CNN’s Sally Kohn. Kohn is a CNN regular who is usually considered an average voice on the Democratic left, and yet earlier this week she proclaimed that it was a “good thing” that conservatives were being silenced.
“If they feel like they can no longer speak against positive social change, good,” the favorite CNN liberal defiantly argued.
This is what we’re dealing with. While Clinton might be able to understand the dangers of stifling free speech, it’s become patently obvious that the majority of liberal America no longer cares.
