COMMENTARY: Open Skies Opponents are Left Wingers and Obama Former Staffers

The most vocal opponents of agreements that protect competition and keep consumer prices down in air travel is something called the “Open Skies” agreements.  These agreements allow the free markets to work in aviation because they restrict government interference in routes, pricing and capacity.  These are agreements that restrain the government from aviation protectionism.

It appears that the large airlines and pilot unions have continued to hire left wing lobbyists to undo these free market agreements. It makes sense, because protectionism and restricting free markets is an idea that has had the long-time support of the left.  It is odd that a Republican Congress and the Trump Administration would listen to a bunch of former Obama Administration partisans who funneled cash to the doomed Hillary Clinton for President campaign.

Left wingers, the big three airlines and unions are the biggest proponents of restricting access to foreign owned airlines.  The big three, United, Delta and American Airlines, have teamed up with the pilots’ unions to spend money on a campaign cronyism and protectionism.

According to Politico Influence on March 30, 2017:

HOW MUCH THE AIRLINES SPENT IN OPEN SKIES FIGHT: The Partnership for Open and Fair Skies, a coalition led by DeltaAmerican and United airlines, spent $6.1 million lobbying in 2015, according to its newly disclosed tax filing. The coalition, formed in 2015, has lobbied first the Obama administration and now the Trump administration to take action against the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, which they accuse of violating “Open Skies” agreements with the U.S. by subsidizing their state-owned carriers, Emirates, Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways. The coalition has sent letters to President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and has been running TV ads on the issue.

— Back in 2015, the partnership spent lavishly to hire a quartet of top Democratic firms, according to the filing. The group spent $3.1 million with the Dewey Square Group (whose three co-founders have been deeply involved in Democratic politics for decades), $1.7 million with SKDKnickerbocker, $620,000 with the Messina Group (founded by Jim Messina, who managed President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign) and $280,000 with Beacon Global Strategies (which is led by Philippe Reines, a longtime Clinton aide, and two Obama administration veterans). The partnership declined to comment, and it’s unclear whether the coalition is still employing all the same firms in the Trump era. The group continues to use SKDKnickerbocker to handle its communications.

SKDKnickerbocker is a left-wing and anti-Trump group.  Any company or interest that employs them has no business being welcome in GOP Hill offices or this White House. SKDKnickerbocker has a new free market bashing ad buy that sounds better targeted to President Hillary Clinton than a conservative market oriented businessman like Donald Trump.

The firm SKDKnickerbocker has had political clients like Barack Obama, Andrew Cuomo, Michael Bloomberg, and the Democratic National Committee. A review of the leaders of the firm show that this is a partisan firm that hates Republicans like Donald Trump and the Republicans controlling Congress.

Hilary Rosen, Managing Director, said a few years ago that Anne Romney, a stay at home mom, has “never worked a day in her life.”  Christine Quinn, former member of the firm, said that Trump “made a gold star mother have to go on TV and cry in front of America.”  Anita Dunn, a named partner in the firm predicted a “Goldwater-Like Disaster” for Trump on March 1, 2016 and has been a long time hostile cable television talking head to anything remotely conservative.

Republicans who are in charge of the executive branch and legislative branch of the federal government would have to be dumb as a bag of rocks to listen to these partisan hacks who want to sabotage Trump.  Calls to dial back or repeal Open Skies agreements would hurt the economy, therefore helping Democrats win elected office.  The big three airlines and the pilot unions should be ashamed of themselves for hiring these partisans thinking that the Trump Administration is dumb enough to listen, thereby crashing any chances of revitalizing the air travel sector of the economy.

Republican insiders on the Hill and in the Trump Administration beware of any propaganda being promoted by lefties at SKDKnickerbocker.
