COMMENTARY: Why Trump Must Reject the Paris Accord

President Trump is opting out of the Paris Accord on climate change. In response, this story was released by The Associated Press: “World powers lined up against U.S. President Donald Trump on climate change, reaffirming their support for international efforts to fight global warming.” The image the media want to create is that US leadership is being abdicated by Trump. Democrats are wishing that their golden boy Obama occupied the Oval Office. He would show us how a real leader behaves. NOT. Sorry, children, but Obama messed things up two years ago. Fortunately, it is not too late for Trump to fix the mess. He can do so by recognizing the top three reasons for dumping the Paris Accord:

  1. There is a preponderance of evidence that global warming is a giant hoax.
  2. The Paris Accord is a disguised attempt by the UN and EU to redistribute economic resources and impose global governance.
  3. The US can demonstrate its leadership by rejecting a bad deal.

Reason Number One: Global warming is a giant hoax. “The oft-repeated claim that nearly all scientists demand that something dramatic be done to stop global warming is not true,” a group of distinguished scientists revealed in the Wall Street Journal. In support of this conclusion is the Global Warming Petition Project, in which 31,000 physicists and physical chemists contend that “there is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gases is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth’s atmosphere and disruption of the Earth’s climate.”

Climate change is recognized as a natural phenomenon. “Climate changes all the time,” says physicist and Nobel laureate Ivar Giaever, “and it’s nothing to do with global warming.” John Coleman, founder of the Weather Channel, says, “There is no significant man-made global warming at this time, there has been none in the past, and there is no reason to fear any in the future.”

Much of the hysteria about climate derives from Al Gore’s 2006 film, An Inconvenient Truth. Gore made a series of ridiculous predictions: melting ice will cause a 20-foot rise in sea level “in the near future”; Arctic summer ice will “completely disappear” within five years; and we have until January 2016 to end our addiction to fossil fuels or the world will come to an end. Author Ben Shapiro nailed it when he observed that the environmental movement creates a crisis and then lies about it, falsifying evidence to convince people to give up their standard of living or we will all die.

Reason Number Two: The Paris Accord is a disguised attempt by the UN and EU to redistribute economic resources. If global warming is a hoax, why did Barack Obama try so hard to force this nonsense down our throats? The answer is that alarmism over climate was used by Obama to (a) justify his appetite for bigger government, and (b) reinforce his globalist aspirations. As exposed by Senator James Inhofe, the hysteria about climate change is fueled by the UN’s desire for global control. “One has to free oneself from the illusion that international climate policy is environmental policy,” confessed German economist and UN official Ottmar Edenhofer. “Climate policy has almost nothing to do anymore with environmental protection,” he said. “The next world climate summit is actually an economy summit during which the distribution of the world’s resources will be negotiated.” In other words, the UN wants to take resources away from us and give them to third world countries.

Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of the UN’s Framework Convention on Climate Change and the driving force behind the Paris Agreement, admitted that the goal of environmental activists is not to save the world from ecological calamity but to destroy capitalism. As reported in Investor’s Business Daily, Figueres said, “This is the first time in the history of mankind that we are setting ourselves the task of intentionally to change the economic development model that has been reigning for at least 150 years, since the Industrial Revolution.”

Reason Number Three: The Paris Accord is a bad deal and the US will demonstrate its leadership by rejecting it. The agreement does not provide penalties for non-compliance. Each signatory can decide what it wants to contribute—or not. “It’s just worthless words,” said renowned climate scientist James Hansen. “There is no action, just promises.” China and India, two of the world’s biggest polluters, are given a pass, but the agreement would impose an economic death-lock on the US.

Climate Change Business Journal quantified the cost of US acquiescence to the Paris Accord at a whopping $1.5 trillion per year. An expenditure of that magnitude would destroy the US economy. What would we get in return? MIT’s Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change projects that, even if every country followed through with its promises, the Paris Agreement would reduce warming by only 0.2 degrees Celsius by the year 2100. Danish environmentalist Bjorn Lomborg puts that figure at a mere 0.048 degrees Celsius or 1/20th of a degree. Hardly worth the effort.

European countries are proving their blindness on two major issues, immigration and climate change. President Trump is providing needed leadership in both areas by (a) not following Angela Merkel’s suicidal policy of accepting unlimited numbers of Middle Eastern “refugees,” and (b) acknowledging that the Paris Accord is a scam. By accepting the Paris Accord, we would be following—not leading—in order to appease the G20 nations. Appeasement has never worked. “Having other countries know that the U.S. President is resolute is valuable diplomatic currency,” says Fox News, “not fecklessness.” Someone has to stand up to the bullying by the UN and the EU. As usual, it will be up to us to push back against international shortsightedness. We are fortunate to have a president who understands this.
