• DHS: 68,000 Criminally Convicted Illegal Immigrants Released in 2013

A Department of Homeland Security report called the “Weekly Departures and Detention Report” revealed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents encountered 193,357 illegal immigrants with criminal convictions but issued charging documents for only 125,478, leaving more than 67,800 who were released by the agency.

Jessica Vaughn, director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies, wrote in a memo summarizing the DHS document:

“ICE released 68,000 criminal aliens in 2013, or 35 percent of the criminal aliens encountered by officers. The vast majority of these releases occurred because of the Obama administration’s prosecutorial discretion policies.”

A few weeks ago, POLITICO revealed that the Obama administration was bowing to pressure when it announced that Obama had “requested a review of his administration’s enforcement policies for immigration laws to see if that enforcement can be done ‘more humanely within the confines of the law’.”

Obama is doing everything he can to regain support from Latinos. His job approval rating is 48 percent among Hispanics who think he’s doing a good job, down from 63 percent in September 2013.
