  • Who’s Afraid of Conservative Comedians?

I was asked to be on HuffPost Live to discuss why liberal comedy thrives, yet conservative comedy falls into the canned laughter abyss. Of course, this is a Huffington Post point of view. The fact of the matter is that conservative comedy, when done well, can be a progressive’s worst nightmare.

As a standup comic myself, I have always liked edgy, sharp and biting comedy that packs a punch. I know that this is not some kind of genetic makeup that only liberals have.  The comedy of Lenny Bruce was defiant of the system, of the man. It rebelled against the system. Today, the system and the man IS the left. Government only grows, never shrinks. Conservatives, strange as that may seem, are the rebels, the counter-cultural forces.

Liberals understand that they have been able to feed society, especially young people, their ideas under the rubric of comedy and entertainment. They’re nervous that conservatives will start to do the same.
