The media’s obsession with all things Lena Dunham continued on ABC’s “The View” on Monday, after co-hosts Jenny McCarthy and Sherri Shepherd decided to follow Lena’s lead and shed their tops. On the latest episode of HBO’s “Girls,” Dunham bore it all, ostensibly to show that “not everyone has body issues.” Jenny and Sherri, in turn, jumped “on the bandwagon” and carried Lena’s message to America. One problem, though. At least in Jenny McCarthy’s case, she’s a former Playboy centerfold and Playmate of the Year. She’s certainly no stranger to nudity, and moreover, I don’t think anyone would argue that she shouldn’t be proud of being 41 and having a body that teenage boys are still lusting over. Are we seriously supposed to believe she’s making some bold statement that should be applauded by young girls who are ashamed of their bodies? I’m sure it was a truly difficult and nerve-racking decision for her to have to make.
Or perhaps ABC wanted to get an early jump on the Nielson sweeps, which begin in less than a month. Oh, that’s right. I guess they’re saving Barbara Walters’ planned naked streak-fest for then.
