National Journal revealed an interesting tidbit this week that I’m guessing most people weren’t previously aware of. Larry Flynt, the outspoken founder of Hustler magazine, has sent a copy of his publication to all 535 members of Congress every single month since 1983!
From the Journal:The dirty mag comes in a plain manila envelope, fairly undetectable to the poor intern or staffer tasked with opening the mail. And every month, there it is: Hustler, featuring dozens of naked or scantly dressed women, vulgar comics, and articles, some satirical, on politics, society, and sex.
If you’ve followed the porn-king’s career–or if you’ve at least seen The People Vs. Larry Flynt–you know that the man has been on a First Amendment crusade for decades…and he’s no friend of Washington. But since no one can seem to do anything about his “special mailings” each month, it has apparently just become a way of life in our nation’s capital. Interns are often shocked when they’ve had the pleasure of opening the infamous manila envelope, but word has it that some lawmakers have ended up putting the skin mags to great use as stocking stuffers. It’s not like members of Congress haven’t tried to stop the magazines from coming. They just can’t stop it legally.
Following the complaints from 264 congressional offices in 1984, the U.S. Postal Service asked the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to block the mailings. But that request failed when the court ruled two years later that the delivery of the magazine could not be stopped. The court wrote:
Receiving Hustler once each month would not unduly burden a Member of Congress. Members are not forced to read the magazine or other of the mail they receive in volume. We cannot imagine that Congressional offices all lack wastebaskets.
Now for the important part: it’s your turn to try and figure out which of those 535 Congressional members are actually reading the thing each month. Place your bets below.
