• UH OH: Al Jazeera America Announces Dozens Of Layoffs

Just seven months after it launched, the Obama White House’s favorite TV news station Al Jazeera America is laying off dozens of employees.

Al Jazeera America launched last August with about 850 staffers. The ambitious, young news network quickly became the twinkle in Obama and Hillary Clinton’s eye. Hillary went so far as to say that compared to traditional American media, Al Jazeera was “real news.”

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Al Jazeera America is slashing its sports unit and cutting back “The Stream,” its social media show, from daily broadcasts to once a week. Those cut included “some staff, freelancers, independent contractors, and other project-oriented individuals who have been with us for several months,” Al Jazeera America president Kate O’Brian said in a memo.

“Now it is time to set our sights on new goals, requiring different levels and areas of investment and resources,” O’Brian wrote.

Recently, Al Jazeera has had to beat back claims that the network operates with an ideology that is sympathetic to Al Qaeda and other anti-western threats.
