• California Woman Delivers 22-Week-Old Baby

"We decided that we wanted to try to save him"

Here is your feel good story of the day.

At just 14-ounces, baby Decklen is now on a ventilator fighting for his life. “He’s only 10 inches long,” Decklen’s father, James Maize, said.

The baby boy was born four months early following an umbilical cord prolapse, which is when the cord makes an appearance before the baby.

“It was a choice between me and my wife if we wanted to try to save him or not,” James said. “We decided that we wanted to try to save him, so they rushed her back for a C-section.”

Last year, the couple lost their daughter after 22 weeks of pregnancy and said they wanted to give baby Decklen a fighting chance.

“If he’s a fighter, you know, we want him to fight and make his own decisions,” James said. “It’s rough…just being able to sit there at his bedside and just pretty much whisper.”

James is serving in the Army and is stationed in Virginia. He flew in to be by his wife Carrie’s side for the medical emergency. They are both hoping that their son’s story can give hope to other parents in the same situation.

“If a baby can be saved, if you have a doctor that is willing to do what he has to do…and we have a great doctor, you know, and he’s doing everything he possibly can for our son,” James said.
