Today Illinois Democrat Rep. Luis V. Gutiérrez blamed House Republicans for failing bring legislation forward to overhaul the nation’s immigration system. In a speech on the House floor, Rep. Gutiérrez warned his Republican rivals that President George W. Bush “will go down in history as the last Republican president” if the GOP continued to delay immigration legislation.
“Even with a majority of Republican voters supporting immigration reform … the positions Republican candidates feel they must take in order to win over their base make them unelectable when they face the American people in the general election,” Gutiérrez said. “If you do nothing on immigration, I guess you can take comfort in knowing that from Abraham Lincoln to George W. Bush, you had a pretty good run.”
I believe Rep. Gutiérrez wants to see immigration reform become a reality. And despite his impassioned pleas, I highly doubt that he gives a flip about the health and future of the Republican Party.
