lIn February, Adam Winters, a Tennessee native auctioned himself off on a popular reality TV show “The Millionaire Matchmaker,” where lonely wealthy men turn to Patti Stanger to help them find true love. But this time, Winters, 25, found himself inside of a federal prison and not a bachelorette–as I’m sure he would have hoped.
The Tennessee millionaire, Stanger dubbed, “The Beverly Hillbilly” relocated to Beverly Hills after making millions in the green energy field. However, after a federal sting operation busted the contestant on charges of allegedly trying to extort millions of dollars from a federal nuclear facility, a federal magistrate ruled that Winters is eligible for a court-appointed attorney because he lacks the funds to afford his own representation.
In Early May, Winters claimed (by email nonetheless) to have acquired 1200 incriminating slides that proved that a Department of Energy facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee had been testing on animals. It gets better. He went a step further to email the FBI’s Knoxville office, and Vice President Joe Biden with his name and phone number attached and a warning that they have “48 hours to respond”.
A sting operation was soon put into place, and federal investigators kept stalling on payments making Winters more anxious, and as time grew brought down his asking price from $5 million to $2.5 million. He was arrested on May 23rd after arriving at the Y-12 National Security Complex when investigators greeted him and told him “the money transfer would not happen.” Winters is awaiting trial at his 1-bedroom Beverly Hills bachelor pad that rents for about $1,600 a month
