There’s only one thing to do when Hillary’s in trouble, and that’s to call in the big guns. By big guns, I of course mean her husband. NBC’s David Gregory sat down with Slick Willy for an interview at the Clinton Global Initiative, and with both Hillary and Chelsea in the audience, Bubba found himself presented with the perfect opportunity to reset the game board.
“We go to our local grocery store on the weekend,” said Bill in an effort to convey The Clintons’ sense of normalcy. “We talk to people in our town. We know what’s going on. The real issue is, if you’ve been fortunate enough to be successful, are you now out of touch and insensitive to the agonizing struggles other people are facing? That’s the real issue.”
Ironically, I’m not sure if Bill’s comments did much of anything to soften his wifey’s gaffe. Just because one visits a grocery store once in a while and talks to his or her neighbors doesn’t mean they’re necessarily in touch with regular people. Personally, I’d like to quiz each one of The Clintons on the average current price of milk and bread, but it would probably end up being a distraction.
The fact is I would have thought The Comeback Kid would have had a stronger defense here, but it really does go to show you what a stupid quote Hillary made in the first place–not even her slippery husband could fix it; he just left it “for you to decide” whether the criticism was fair. This does not portend well for her impending 2016 presidential run, but I’m certainly not complaining. If it’s suddenly Amateur Hour for The Clintons, it’ll make it that much easier to send ’em packing. And given the $100 million that Bill has made since his presidency ended, I don’t think it’ll hurt too bad…except the pain from Bill and Hill’s bruised egos, of course.
