“To have a real sense of what these kids go through, we have heard about how before they leave Central America, some of these kids’ parents actually would give them birth control, in case they are raped along their way,” said Johnson.
While that may or may not be true, the horrible sob-story does nothing to explain why Obama’s proposed $3.7 billion dollar funding request would do anything to change it. Secretary Johnson continually speaks about how those funds will go towards granting him greater “discretion” on these matters, but we’ve never been told what that actually means. As far as I’m concerned, discretion is free. Concrete actions cost money. And because we haven’t actually heard any proposed concrete actions that those billions of bucks will allow for (at least as they relate to a more secure border), it’s difficult to trust anything the administration is saying.
But fear-mongering and implying that young girls will be raped if we don’t invest nearly $4 billion Benjamins into some nebulous plan? That’s low.
