If you watch this brief 20-second clip, the answer to our headline question comes at the end. But if you can’t wait that long, it’s a fairly simple answer:Flip-flops.
You heard me. If you’re going to get behind the wheel, make sure you have proper footwear, friendos. Especially if you happen to be 85-years old.
The California Highway Patrol investigated the incident that let to the crash, and what they determined was this: an elderly man was pulling into his garage, when his flip-flops got tangled in the pedals (the officer above referred to a “shoe or sandal,” but they were confirmed to be flip-flops). It didn’t take long for the white sedan to zoom out of the rear garage door and end up fully submerged in the man’s pool, at which point it didn’t do a whole lot of flipping OR flopping.
It was like something out of Bad Grandpa.
The pool footage may be entertaining, but flip-flops can actually kill. Three people died back in 2011 when a woman’s flip-flops got caught under the accelerator in a similar fashion to this. They cause tons of accidents, as do women’s high heels.
So, you know, don’t flip and drive.
