Clocking in at just around two minutes, this is a rather short clip. But that’s just a testament to how powerful a tribute it really is. Among Robin Williams’ most famous roles was that of The Genie from Disney’s “Aladdin,” which has since been turned into a Broadway musical. James Inglehart has been playing the role in the stage version, and he wanted to do something special to honor the man whose take on the character will live forever. So, to close one of the performances this week, he invited the audience to sing along with him, a capella style, for a rendition of “Friend Like Me” that they’ll never forget.
Simple? Indeed. But it hits all of the right notes, and it celebrates just one small grain of the incomparable life’s work of a master performer.
