It took him a while to weigh in on the whole Redskins name dispute, but now that he has, NFL Hall of Famer Mike Ditka didn’t disappoint.
He called the entire ordeal “stupid” and “appalling.”“What’s all the stink over the Redskin name? It’s so much horse shit it’s incredible. We’re going to let the liberals of the world run this world. It was said out of reverence, out of pride to the American Indian. Even though it was called a Redskin, what are you going to call them, a Brownskin?” Ditka quipped.
“This is so stupid it’s appalling, and I hope that owner keeps fighting for it and never changes it, because the Redskins are part of an American football history, and it should never be anything but the Washington Redskins. That’s the way it is.”
“Leave it alone these people are silly, asinine in my opinion.” he added.
Redskins owner Dan Snyder has already said he will “never change the name,” and also said people engage in a silly debate about an NFL team name to avoid talking about the real issues facing Native American communities.
“No one ever talks about what’s happening on reservations,” Snyder said “The fact that they have such high unemployment rates, health care issues, education issues, environmental issues, lack of water, lack of electricity.”“No one wants to talk about that stuff, because it’s not cocktail, chit-chat-talk, it’s a real-life need, real-life issues. And I think they don’t want to focus on that.”
