Alright, perhaps that’s a tall order. But it still doesn’t excuse the tirade that Fox News contributor Juan Williams went on yesterday. Juan doesn’t usually agree with conservatives on a whole lot, but you’ve got to admit that he’s usually more sensible than this tantrum…which sounds like it was scripted by James Carville in the green room.
“Lots of people in the minority community see it as an attack against the first black president,” declared Williams. “They think it’s unfair, and so it’s going to spur their turnout in the midterms, which is going to be critical in several races.”
Okay, fair enough. At that point, Juan was mostly focused on the perception that minority voters may have right now. Since I’m not a minority voter, I can’t confirm or deny that sentiment. But it’s what Mr. Williams said next that flew completely off the deep end:
“The people who want him impeached are all white, they’re all older, and guess what? They’re all in the far right-wing of the Republican Party.”
Wow, thanks Juan! Mind if I borrow that Broad Brush of yours? I’d like to do a little painting of my own on the faces of your liberal buddies. Now, I’m not arguing that impeaching the president is a mainstream viewpoint among Republicans, of course. After all, I’ve already created a video to demonstrate that most of the impeachment talk actually rests with the Democrats who are trying to fundraise off of it. But that doesn’t mean the few who ARE calling for impeachment are doing it for racist reasons, and it certainly doesn’t mean John Boehner himself was motivated by race when he decided to pursue his lawsuit against Obama. But try explaining that to Juan.
“All I can do is look at the numbers,” he continued. “If you look at the core constituency of the people who are in, let’s say, Tea Party opposition support of impeachment, there’s no diversity. It’s a white, older group of people … who is this group? It reminds me that the Republican has become almost a completely white party.”
A completely white party, eh?
So…I guess Dr. Ben Carson doesn’t exist then? How about Herman Cain? Or Mia Love? How about Ken Blackwell or Michael Steele? Ever heard of Jesse Lee Peterson? Tim Scott? J.C. Watts or…oh yeah, JUSTICE CLARENCE THOMAS?
Sure, the GOP looks like a bunch of white racists to me!What an asinine thing to say, and it’s disappointing that Juan was the guy to say it.
