If you live in the state of California, get ready for a whirlwind of plastic-free fun. California Governor Jerry Brown signed legislation into law on Tuesday that makes The Golden State the first in the nation outlawing single-use plastic bags. Oh, the horror!
The ban takes effect in July of next year, and it makes it so that grocery stores will no longer be allowed to use the material that drives environmentalists insane and clogs up waterways. Soon thereafter, smaller businesses such as liquor and convenience stores will have to follow suit in 2016.And here’s the best part: the law allows these stores to now charge customers 10 cents for paper or reusable bags. So shop wisely, grocery store patrons!
The co-author of the bill, California State Senator Kevin de Leόn, is ecstatic. He says it’s a “win-win for the environment and for California workers,” adding that “We are doing away with the scourge of single-use plastic bags and closing the loop on the plastic waste stream, all while maintaining—and growing—California jobs.”
Who knew plastic bags were such a “scourge”? After all, they make for great dog waste cleanup devices. Imagine trying to walk your pup with a giant paper bag in tow.
