• Trick or Treat: Rangel Invokes Civil War, Racism, and Slavery to Smear GOP Ahead of Election

You can always count on Harlem’s most controversial congressman to deliver a sweeping, hyperbolic denunciation of the Republican party. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office is probably not too thrilled about Charlie Rangel’s choice of words in his stump speech intended to help turn out the Democratic vote this Tuesday.

We have to win, and we’re going to be able to send a national message with Andrew Cuomo,” shouted Rangel. “And the thing is everything we believe in — everything we believe in they hate. They don’t disagree, they hate! They think that if you didn’t come from Europe thirty years ago, we shouldn’t have immigration! Some of them believe that slavery isn’t over and that they won the Civil War!

The remarks are nothing new from Broad Brush Charlie, who has a history of characterizing Republicans — and the Tea Party in particular — as racist hate-mongers.

But interestingly enough, there was a panel over at CNN today that universally blasted the New York numbskull for his dubious rhetoric:

I’m trying to figure out why is he even still in office,” remarked ESPN’s LZ Granderson. “After he’s been busted on eleven counts of ethics violations, why is he still in office? Because the types of things that he’s doing right now — saying those kinds of things are absolutely ridiculous.”

He added, “If you think what he said is true, then I’m just going to tell you the truth: you’re an idiot. Because slavery and that time period does not exist today.”

GOP strategist Ana Navarro was similarly nonplussed by Charlie’s latest outburst. “I just have a hard time taking anything Charlie Rangel says with any seriousness. This is a guy who’s totally discredited. He has been in Congress since dinosaurs roamed the earth.”

Even CNN’s John Berman seemed shocked. “That seems like a fairly outrageous comment,” the anchor observed.

Well, it’s nice to see that conservatives aren’t the only ones who are sick and tired of Rangel’s crap. But denouncing him in this way doesn’t mean much unless Democrat voters can actually bring themselves to vote this scumbag out of office. It seems like Charlie can do or say just about anything, from cheating during debates to littering — and he’ll still handily win re-election.

Besides, this type of evil race-baiting is sort of the modus operandi for Democrats. Most of them simply don’t happen to be quite as blunt as this jerk.
