Administration That Just Fired Hagel Says He Wasn’t Fired

Was Chuck Hagel fired? Not according to the people who fired him. Wait, what?

Pentagon Spokesman John Kirby appeared on Fox News this morning, where he asserted unequivocally that the Secretary of Defense was NOT fired, and that it was absolutely a mutual decision reached between Hagel and Obama.

“He was not fired. The Secretary and the president had a series of discussions about his future and the future of the Pentagon and the direction that the Obama administration wanted to take in the last two years, and I think both men determined that this was the right time for him to step down,” Kirby insisted.

He added that “It’s common in our culture that you get fresh leadership every now and then.”

If his predecessors — including Robert Gates and Leon Panetta — are any indication, Hagel’s inevitable tell-all book just might tell a different story.
