As if being humiliated by American voters wasn’t bad enough, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that President Obama has been busy writing secret letters to Iran’s supreme leader, asking for help to combat ISIS.
Obama actually wrote one letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. But that’s one too many.Obama emphasized Iran’s shared interest with the west in the fight to defeat the Islamic State, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday:
White House press secretary Josh Earnest denied the letter’s authenticity. However, Obama officials “didn’t deny the letter’s existence when questioned by foreign diplomats in recent days,” WSJ reports. The letter appeared aimed both at buttressing the Islamic State campaign and nudging Iran’s religious leader closer to a nuclear deal.
Mr. Obama stressed to Mr. Khamenei that any cooperation on Islamic State was largely contingent on Iran reaching a comprehensive agreement with global powers on the future of Tehran’s nuclear program by a Nov. 24 diplomatic deadline, [people briefed on the letter] say.
The October letter marked at least the fourth time Mr. Obama has written Iran’s most powerful political and religious leader since taking office in 2009 and pledging to engage with Tehran’s Islamist government.
The Iranians have been giving Obama the cold shoulder. And Khamenei has yet to respond to Obama’s request for help.
“I don’t trust the Iranians, I don’t think we need to bring them into this, and I would hope that the negotiations that are underway are serious negotiations. But I have my doubts,” Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) told the Journal.
ISIS has been forcefully seizing whole swaths of land in Iraq and Syria since at least 2010. They are now “among the most well-funded terrorist organizations in the world,” according to the U.S. Treasury Department.
For more perspective, ISIS now has more land, money, and militants than al-Qaeda had on September 11, 2001. Most of this mass murdering empire’s wealth is being funded by the exploitation of stolen recourses from historical sites, private funding, and ransom.
If Obama has to stoop so low as to ask for help from the Iranians, that’s a sign that things are likely going to get worse for people in that region before they get better.Send this to a friend
