As expected, the Kentucky Woman was put to bed last night. Alison Lundergan Grimes (D) got blown out of the water by Senator Mitch McConnell (R) of all people. It’s got to sting to be defeated by such a mild-mannered Republican, but that just goes to show you how awful a candidate she really was.
Whether it was her devastating gaffe in which she refused to even admit having voted for Barack Obama — something that continued to dog her on the campaign trail until the end — or the damning revelations about her family business, it soon became clear that she was none of the things Democrats were hoping she would be. Early on in her campaign, I heard Grimes compared by liberal analysts to Hillary Clinton. But it turned out that when it came to political talent, she was barely a speck on The Clintons’ shoes. For someone who was supposed to be such a rising star in her party, she certainly ended up being one vapid candidate.A bipartisan panel over at CNN more or less joined together to laugh at the failed campaign.
“When she goes through an entire week and I think five different times refused to say who she had voted for when she’s been a delegate twice — she was the Democratic Secretary of State — it crippled her believability,” remarked Newt Gingrich.
“I think it was devastating for her,” added Van Jones. “She looked like a laughing stock. She came on as somebody who was this firebrand, this tough talker, she was believable, she was authentic, she was going to take on the establishment…and then she can’t even tell you who she voted for? I think it totally wrecked her. It was political malpractice.”
Yep, I’d say “put a fork in her,” Surgers … but Alison Lundergan Grimes is WAY past “done.” The much more interesting question now is watching to see how Bill Clinton copes with the loss in one of the races he was “obsessed” with helping propel to victory.
Incidentally, Alison proved just how much of an amateur she was by not even congratulating Senator McConnell during her concession speech. Classy:Even the boneheads over at MSNBC weren’t digging her remarks:
In contrast, a very gracious McConnell said that Grimes had earned his respect throughout the campaign. Like him or not, this is how a professional politician does business:
