• Mass. Education Secretary To Become A Butcher

In an unusual twist of fate, Massachusetts’ outgoing secretary of education has announced that he is leaving the rough-and-tumble world of education policy to become a butcher.

Matthew Malone, a Republican, holds a Ph.D and was previously superintendent of Brockton Public Schools, and has served in the administration of Gov. Deval Patrick for the past two years. However, Malone says that at heart he is a “foodie” who wants to learn more about the skills that go into preparing high-quality cuisine.

“We’ve lost in America, we’ve lost the art of craftsmanship,” Malone told the State House News Service. “So, I’m going to take the time, after Jan. 8 when we walk out with the governor, and learn the art, the love, the passion of being an expert at something.”

To that end, Malone has accepted an unpaid internship at Tony’s Market in the Roslindale neighborhood of Boston. Even the owner, Tony DeBenedictus, says he thought the educator was joking when he asked for the job. But Malone says his endeavor is no joke.

“I want to learn to be a butcher,” he said. “I’ve got the time, let’s do it.”

This isn’t the fling of a policymaker on the verge of retirement, either. Malone is only 44, and at the peak of his career. As recently as October, he was aspiring to become the next superintendent of Boston Public Schools

Malone said that he will probably return to education someday, but wants to learn something new first and potentially discover a passion.
