A 19-year-old man from Alabama is staring down a 20-year sentence for apparently stealing a military Humvee and driving it erratically on the wrong side of the road.
In a small city of approximately 30,352 people, Jacob Russell Durant decided to make Alabaster history after getting his hands on a stolen military Humvee, WVTM Birmingham, a local NBC affiliate, reports. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office received numerous calls on Friday night alerting deputies to a strange and bizarre scenario: a Humvee driving on the wrong side of the road without its headlights on at 11 p.m. Deputies quickly arrived on the scene and arrested Durant, then realizing the Humvee was from the Army Reserves station in Birmingham, Ala.
Durant is being held in jail on a $10,000 bond and the sheriffs are returning the Humvee back to the 5th Medical Brigade, Army Reserve Unit, where it belongs. Based on jail records, it does not appear that Durant has an attorney.
Durant is being charged with a first-degree felony count of receiving stolen property. Since receiving stolen property is a Class B felony, Durant may land himself in jail for 20 years. That’s the only charge local authorities have listed for now, as officials still don’t know how Durant got his hands on the vehicle. But local sheriffs are encouraging members of the public to come forward with any information they might have as the investigation continues.
This isn’t the first time Durant has run afoul of the law. In April 2014, Durant was charged with third degree theft of property, which means that the value of the property didn’t exceed $500 dollars– a far cry from the mess he has now landed himself in. He was also charged with public intoxication and trying to escape from custody, according to The Alabama Inquirer.
