• This Factory Worker Walks 21 Miles A Day To Work. What Happens Next Will Melt Your Heart

James Robertson, a 56 year old factory worker from Detroit, has been commuting 21 miles by foot to his $10.55 per-hour job ever since his car broke down ten years ago. Robertson recently told his story to the Detroit Free Press, and shortly after his story was published…the internet would soon come to his rescue.

As of noon Monday, social media fundraisers have raised over $64,000 in donations from complete strangers to help him pay for a car, insurance and financial guidance to manage the donations.

    From USA Today:

Evan Leedy, 19, of Macomb Township, a WSU student studying computer science, said he was struck by the article and by the sudden torrent of people commenting online, many of them asking how they could help Robertson. Leedy said he decided to act.

“I just used my phone. I created the go-funding site and within an hour we had $2,000,” he said.

“I set the goal at the beginning of $5,000. Right now my page has more than $30,000” as of 6 p.m. Sunday, Leedy said.

Two other people created GoFundMe sites, “so I contacted them so we could coordinate this, and they’ve raised $3,000,” he added.

Robertson has been known to consume large amounts of Mountain Dew and Coca-Cola just to maintain enough energy to be able to keep up with his daily commute, which begins every morning at 8 am in order to be on-time for his 2-10 pm shift and doesn’t end until 4 am.

“Tough times don’t last – tough people do”, said Robertson.

And while he can now enjoy the support of a community who helped change his world forever, it was his story of determination that changed us.
