• Great News! The Number Of Feds Paid 200K Increased Last Year

The number of government workers paid more than $200,000 a year increased from about 15,000 to 17,000 last year, even as wages remained stagnant for most Americans.

More than 16,900 federal civilian employees — mostly in the Veterans Affairs Department — were paid in excess of a $200,000 base salary in 2014, according to federal salary data compiled by FedSmith.com and reported by Government Executive. Those salaries do not include bonuses, and the government does not disclose the salaries of workers for the Department of Defense.

An overwhelming majority of the high earners work as medical officers at the Veterans Affairs Department, which also paid the only reported salaries topping $400,000 to two of its doctors.

Other agencies that paid a few employees the six-figure sum include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration, the Federal Housing Finance Agency and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Another 1,600 federal employees made more than $300,000 last year.

Median wages for Americans have stalled since before 2000, tempering the Obama administration’s celebration of an economic recovery, and preventing most Americans from feeling the effects of those improving indicators. (RELATED: GOP, Democrats Unite To Complain About Low Wages)

Most federal employee pay is capped under the General Schedule at less than $130,000. The highest paid executive branch employees, including the vice president, make about $200,000. But some agencies that require a specialized workforce, such as the VA and SEC, have much higher pay caps.

Those earning more than $200,000 represent about 1.6 percent of civilian federal employees whose salaries are disclosed.
