• Now They’re Interested In Facts: NBC’s Memo To Editorial Staff

Things at NBC have gone into severely awkward territory, but now NBC is doing something that they’re not used to doing…gathering facts. Yep, the Network claims to have launched an investigation into Brian Williams’ fabrications as the on-air anchor steps down on a leave of absence.

Here’s the thing, though. Apparently Brian Williams’ tall tales were so unbelievable when he told them that he was the butt of jokes within his own news division.

    Writes the lefty Maureen Dowd:

THIS was a bomb that had been ticking for a while.

NBC executives were warned a year ago that Brian Williams was constantly inflating his biography. They were flummoxed over why the leading network anchor felt that he needed Hemingwayesque, bullets-whizzing-by flourishes to puff himself up, sometimes to the point where it was a joke in the news division.

But now the Peacock network is interested in whether or not their big-shot anchor is a serial fabulist. The president of NBC News, Deborah Turness, sent out a memo describing the fact-finding mission that they are now on as it relates to Brian Williams.

Stars and Stripes published the internal memo in full. Read below for your amusement!

    All,

This has been a difficult few days for all of us at NBC News.

Yesterday, Brian and I spoke to the Nightly News team. And this morning at the Editorial Exchange, we both addressed the wider group. Brian apologized once again, and specifically expressed how sorry he is for the impact this has had on all of you and on this proud organization.

As you would expect, we have a team dedicated to gathering the facts to help us make sense of all that has transpired. We’re working on what the best next steps are — and when we have something to communicate we will of course share it with you.

Since joining NBC News, I’ve seen great strength and resilience. We are a close-knit family, and your response this week has made that even clearer.

As a relentless news agenda marches on, thank you again for continuing to do what we do best — bring the most important stories of the day to our audience.

    Deborah
