  • The Selling Out of the Republican Party

On Tuesday, outraged citizens descended upon the County Administration bldg. in San Diego, California. Many took the morning off work to attend a County Supervisors Board Meeting, to voice their opposition to a recent vote.

You see San Diego County Supervisors have basically wiped out any chance of fair elections in the region by voting 4 to 1 to limit donations from political parties. The controversial move would cap supervisor races at $25,000 and countywide offices would max out with $50,000. What may be most surprising about all of this is that 3 of those who voted on this measure are Republican.

What makes this so astonishing is that in San Diego, unions are prevalent and their cash filled hands help out a lot of Democratic candidates. Why would three Republicans, knowing this vote to stifle the party? Well, Republican Party Chairman of San Diego County, Tony Krvaric suggests perhaps they have sold out to special interests? Indeed, it would appear so. Whatever the case may be it is more than disappointing that people who were voted into office to reflect the principles of their supporters have turned so rancid.

Now, money that would have gone to either Democrat or Republican parties will move underground into the hands of mighty unions. Why shouldn’t the Citizens United ruling; which allowed individuals to make unlimited contributions to independent expenditure committees be afforded to political parties? Shouldn’t that Constitutional right apply to our parties as well?

Despite the large crowd that showed up in opposition to the limiting of donations to political parties, the Board of Supervisors still approved it. So much for listening to your constituents.

People scream, transparency, I want transparency yet; we have morphed into one of the most opaque times in American history. Sadly, this is a blatant  attempt to curtail the free speech of both the Republican and Democrat parties.
