Nation’s Only ‘Gay Gang’ Seeks Money For Documentary

In 2005, a group of high schoolers got fed up of being taunted and beaten up for being gay, and they decided to fight back.

The boys formed a crew, calling themselves “Check It,” and decided to go on the offensive.

The “Check It” crew is now the subject of a feature-length documentary being produced by Steve Buscemi and his production company, Olive Productions, because they are gay and that makes them different from every other street gang in the country. They are also seeking help to produce the film with an Indiegogo campaign.

When people think of street gangs, most of them think of hoodlums walking around their neighborhoods carrying brass knuckles and knives looking to start fights. That is true of this gang, too, but they also like to wear lipstick and stilettos and carry Louis Vuitton bags.

The film follows the crew around their “infamous” north east Washington D.C. neighborhood of Trinidad, which is known around the district to be a very rough place to live — even more so if you are an openly gay black man walking around in women’s clothing.

“Trinidad was legendary for chronic gun violence, which resulted in the police department taking the drastic step to set up checkpoints for drivers coming into the neighborhood to determine if they had a ‘legitimate purpose’ for entering,” the gang wrote on their Indiegogo page.

Members of the gay and transgender youth gang the film follows have been shot, stabbed and raped, and have long rap sheets, mostly full of various street crimes, and many of them have done time in jail, according to their Indiegogo website.
