• Pot Luck! Hundreds Gather For Pot Seeds In DC

Over 1,000 people gathered at a bar to trade marijuana seeds in Washington D.C. Thursday night.

Police looked on as roughly 1,300 people passed through the doors of the Libertine bar over the course of an evening to get their hands on some coveted seeds to start their own personal marijuana growing operations.

The line stretched around two blocks as people waited patiently to take advantage of a ballot measure approved last fall by voters that made personal possession of up to two ounces of the plant legal. Thousands of seeds were traded among the event’s participants.

“We have a new right now, and that right is to grow at home,” Adam Eidinger, the leader of the D.C. Cannabis Campaign, told NBC Washington. “That’s one way to obtain marijuana.”

Thanks to the initiative passed by the D.C. Council earlier this year, the whole thing was completely legal, since none of the seeds were bought or sold by the participants. The law says it is okay for people to gift their seeds to friends, but selling or exchanging seeds is still against the law.

Guests at the event were only allowed to give away one ounce of seeds, and once people get the seeds home they are allowed to grow up to six plants for personal use. Only three plants can be mature at one time. If attendees at the event plant their seeds soon enough, they will be able to legally enjoy their marijuana by late summer.

This was the first of two seed exchanges planned by the D.C. Cannabis Campaign, the group that spearheaded the effort to legalize marijuana in the district. The next seed share event is Saturday.
