A freshman Republican congressman was caught on video threatening to knock out a conservative protester during a demonstration about immigration outside his office on Friday.
“You told me you didn’t vote for amnesty and you did. I looked it up on the Internet,” a protester, who called himself “Mike,” said as he shook the congressman’s hand. “You lied to me.”“Mike, if you touch me again, I’ll drop your ass,” Rep. Steve Knight (R-CA) replied after the man slapped him on the shoulder and walked away.
The man backed anyway, and protested that he had only shaken the congressman’s hand.
Knight, a former Los Angeles police officer, contends he never voted for “amnesty,” saying there were several versions of the bill and that he voted against President Obama.
Mike was part of an anti-immigration protest organized by the group, Save Our State, which is known for its anti-immigrant rallies. They organized a protest in In 2010, which a local city councilman referred to himself as a “proud racist.”
“I have dealt with this group on several occasions and every time they try to escalate our conversations to a level that is not constructive,” Knight said in a statement on Tuesday. “Over this past weekend, I lost my cool and I regret responding the way I did.”The group called for the congressman to apologize for his behavior in a statement about the incident on the Save Our State discussion forum. The protesters accused Knight of voting for “amnesty” by voting to support Department of Homeland Security funding despite the fact that the annual legislation would provide money for President Barack Obama’s executive actions that shielded millions from deportation.
Senate Democrats successfully filibustered a bill going after Obama’s executive orders. House Republicans, including Knight, then capitulated and passed bill to fund DHS bill without blocking the president’s executive orders.
