In February, Dan Rathers, a longtime CBS News host and close friend to Brian Williams, told POLITICO he doesn’t “know the particulars about that day in Iraq.”
“I do know Brian,” Rathers said. “He’s a longtime friend and we have been in a number of war zones and on the same battlefields, competing but together. Brian is an honest, decent man, an excellent reporter and anchor–and a brave one. I can attest that — like his predecessor Tom Brokaw — he is a superb pro, and a gutsy one.”And now Rathers says “objectively, it’s hard to see how NBC brings him back.”
“With these leaks to the Washington Post and New York Times, vicious really in their own way . . . as the investigation goes on, it’s very hard to see how” NBC as a corporation will be able to put this Brian Williams scandal “behind them.”
Rather’s comments made over the weekend on CNN were in reference to NBC’s in-house investigation which looked into Brian Williams’ past reports, which confirm at least 10 instances of lies and exaggerations Brian Williams made while he was an NBC anchor.
The saddest part about all of this, to me, is that Brian Williams was the one NBC newsman who usually came across as the least hacky of all of NBC New’s partisan anchors.
It’ll be interesting to see how this all shakes out.Send this to a friend
