Why bother with green cards, securing the borders or preventing more illegals from entering the country? Why doesn’t the government just issue all illegal immigrants a ‘do not deport me’ card?
Sound absurd? Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) and other Democrats in Congress think it’s a great idea. The Illinois Democrat has created what he is calling a “family defender tool kit”, a pamphlet designed to help illegal immigrants avoid deportation while they wait to apply for amnesty under President Obama’s executive order .
“I created this tool kit for you to protect yourself from deportation,” Gutierrez, the chairman of the Immigration Task Force of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, said in a video describing the pamphlet.
The ‘tool kit’ instructs illegal immigrants how to apply for the executive amnesty program, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA), and encourages illegal immigrants to carry a card that asks immigration officers not to deport them if they are detained.
“I want you to cut the card in the tool kit and keep it in your wallet and use it in case of emergency,” Gutierrez said. “Use this card only if you are arrested and detained by an immigration official.”
The card reads: “Do not deport me because I am eligible for DACA or DAPA,” and repeats that line in Spanish.“By using this card after you’ve been arrested or detained you can explain that under the policy in place today, you should be released because you’re not a priority for deportation,” he added.
The President’s amnesty orders have been delayed pending a legal case which is currently under a Texas federal judge’s injunction.
“I hope that you never have to use this card,” he said. “But if you do, don’t be scared because you are prepared. Soon enough the DACA and DAPA applications will be available, and when that time comes around you will have everything you need to apply.”
