• George W. Bush Rips Obama’s Foreign Policy: ‘When You Say Something, You Have To Mean It’

Former President George W. Bush delivered his harshest criticisms to date against his successor on foreign policy and current national security threats in a closed-door meeting hosted by the Republican Jewish Coalition on Saturday night.

“In order to be an effective president … when you say something you have to mean it—you gotta kill em,” Bush said in a critique of Obama’s failure to follow through on his promise to destroy ISIS.

He called Obama’s decision to withdraw all U.S. troops in Iraq at the end of 2011 at “strategic blunder” and said he views the rise of the Islamic State as al-Qaeda’s “second act.” They may have changed their name, he said, but murdering innocents is still the favored tactic.

Bush indirectly touted his admiration’s handling of terrorism, noting that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who confessed to killing Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, was captured on his watch.

“Just remember the guy who slit Danny Pearl’s throat is in Gitmo,” he said. “Now [ISIS is] doing it on TV.”

Bush mocked Obama’s perceived indecisiveness and said America’s allies and enemies needed to know where an American leader stood while Obama caused the United States to “retreat” around the globe.

He said that Obama’s plan to lift sanctions on Iran is naïve and that a nuclear deal with Iran would be bad for American national security in the long term.

“You think the Middle East is chaotic now?” Bush said about the nuclear deal. “Imagine what it looks like for our grandchildren. That’s how Americans should view the deal.”

Bush described Iran’s new president, Hassan Rouhani. “He’s smooth,” Bush said. “And you’ve got to ask yourself, is there a new policy or did they just change the spokesman?”

The appearance was unusual for the former president, who has intentionally refrained from criticizing or attacking Obama in public and largely disappeared from politics since leaving office, but his remarks were transcribed by an attendees of the meeting.

Bush also talked about Vladimir Putin’s high approval rating at home in Russia.

“Hell, I’d be popular, too, if I owned NBC News,” he said.
